Are my pre-warmed domains on a blocklist (SURBL, Spamhaus), and does it matter?

A blocklist listing on a new domain is common and alone hasn't been seen to hurt deliverability, so judge your domains by how your campaigns perform.

You may find that your domains show up on a blocklist such as SURBL or Spamhaus when you check them yourself. A listing on a new domain is more common than it sounds. Our infrastructure team's testing hasn't shown a listing alone hurting deliverability, so judge your domains by how your campaigns perform.

TL;DR

  • A SURBL listing on new pre-warmed domains is more common than it sounds.

  • Our infrastructure team's testing hasn't shown a listing alone hurting deliverability.

  • What matters is how your sending performs: positive replies, reply rate and bounce rate.

  • If your bounce rate climbs above 5%, or you see a spike in sender bounces, message support.

  • Keep using verified leads, several variants and spintax.

When you'd use this

Use this when you ran your domains through a blocklist checker, or a tool or recipient flagged them, and you want to know whether to worry. Pre-warmed domains are usually .info, but the ending can vary.

How to decide whether it matters

Step 1: Check how your campaigns perform

Look at your results, not just the listing. The benchmark is 1 positive reply per 1,000 people contacted, with a reply rate above 1%. See How do I read my results in Analytics, and why are there no open rates?.

Step 2: Check your bounce rate

If your bounce rate is under 5% and your positive replies are healthy, there is nothing to fix. You don't need to pause your campaigns or your ramp-up.

Step 3: Keep your sending clean

Step 4: Message support if performance drops

If your bounce rate climbs above 5%, or you see a spike in sender bounces, send us a message in the app with your domain names and what you're seeing. Our support team replies Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm ET. See also Why is my bounce rate high and how do I fix it? and What does "sender bounced" mean, and how do I fix a high sender bounce rate?.

What good looks like

Judge by performance, not by a checker. A domain can be listed and still send well. A domain with a high bounce rate and falling positive replies needs attention, listed or not.

Expected outcome

  • You know a blocklist listing on its own isn't a reason to stop sending.

  • You judge your domains by positive replies, reply rate and bounce rate, and message support if they drop.

FAQ

Are my pre-warmed domains really on a blocklist?

It's possible. A SURBL listing on new .info domains is more common than it sounds.

Does a listing hurt my deliverability?

Our infrastructure team's testing hasn't shown a listing alone hurting deliverability. What matters is how your sending performs.

Should I pause my campaigns?

Not just because of a listing. If your bounce rate is under 5% and your positive replies are healthy, keep going.

When should I message support?

If your bounce rate climbs above 5%, or you see a spike in sender bounces. Include your domain names and what you're seeing.

Can support get my domain removed from a blocklist?

No. A blocklist listing doesn't mean your campaign won't work. Judge your domains by positive replies, reply rate and bounce rate, as described above.

Can I get a domain swapped?

Domain names can't be changed once setup has started. See What are pre-warmed inboxes, how do I set them up, and what if they're out of stock? for how pre-warmed domains work.
